At NSIWA, we strive to create a welcoming community for insurance professionals of all genders. We:
- Encourage and foster insurance related educational programs for our members to make them more responsive to the requirements of the Canadian Insurance Industry
- Foster and enhance the professional development of our members
- Foster and facilitate networking among our members and with other professionals
The Nova Scotia Insurance Women’s Association (NSIWA) is a nonprofit insurance industry related association for women and men which fosters and promotes education, professional development, and networking among its members. Originating in 1960, NSIWA is a proud charter member of the Canadian Association of Insurance Women. With over 115 active members in Atlantic Canada, we welcome any person(s) engaged independently or through employment in any office, selling or servicing insurance of any type.
We hold monthly meetings from September through May at Brightwood Golf and Country Club in Dartmouth where we promote Networking with our Educational speakers and Teambuilding sessions. We also raise funds through our Cancer Crusade committee for cancer research as well as various other charitable causes throughout the year. We are always looking for new members and/or existing members to get involved in our various committees and community events. If you are interested in becoming a member of our association, we welcome you to contact our Membership Chair, Adelle Long.

"Being a member of NSIWA has given me a strong sense of community within our industry. It's a place where we learn from each other, share ideas, and genuinely support one another's success. The networking, professional development opportunities, and friendships I've gained through NSIWA have enriched both my career and my confidence as a leader. It's more than a membership... it's being a part of something meaningful."

Please reach us at info@nsiwa.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.
No! While the Association was founded in 1969 to empower women in the insurance industry, we welcome all gender identities as allies and members of NSIWA. Our Association is one of several across Canada that are part of CAIW, the Canadian Association of Insurance Women. While some associations have changed their names to be more inclusive, NSIWA pays tribute to the roots of our founding members by retaining Women in our name.
Anyone can become a member if they are involved in either the insurance industry directly or indirectly. This includes retirees, any member of any local association, and also associate members (members who may not be able to travel due to distance).
NSIWA is based out of the Halifax Region of Nova Scotia. Our current monthly dinner meetings are currently held at the Brightwood Golf Course in Dartmouth.
Our General meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month from September to May. There may be some meeting dates that change due to venue restrictions, but our meeting dates are current on our website.
There is a minimal yearly membership fee which includes being a member of CAIW. There is also a cost associated with our general meetings and events.
The monthly General meetings consist of a meal, a business meeting, and either education or another activity. Dietary restrictions are accommodated provided you include it in your RSVP to the dinner.
Some of the activities throughout the year are our participation in the Shoebox Project, our Christmas Auction, and our Public Speaking Contest.
Yes! NSIWA holds various events throughout the year. We host a Golf Day in September of every year, an industry Wine and Cheese event every February, and most years we also hold a members only Mini Conference weekend (February/March).
NSIWA is proud to have supported many charitable organizations throughout the years. Our main charity is in support of Nova Scotia Breast Cancer Research. Every November, we also participate in the Shoebox Project where we donate boxes filled with essential items for individuals who reside in shelters due to leaving unsafe environments. These boxes are assembled by our members at our general meeting. We support Feed NS and other organizations with profits obtained from our Wine and Cheese and Golf Day events yearly.
In addition, we contribute 3 yearly donations to organizations that are nominated by our members. These 3 organizations receive this donation for a period of 3 years, at which time we ask for nominations again.
NSIWA feels it is important to contribute to as many organizations yearly as possible.
We have multiple national and local awards. At the local level, we host our annual Public Speaking contest. The winner of this contest wins the opportunity to attend and compete at the CAIW Convention against the winners from other associations. The awards association with our CAIW Convention are: Insurance Woman of the Year (individual member), the Rising Star Award (individual member), the Insurance Awareness Campaign Award (association), or the Achievement Award (association). All award winners from NSIWA can be found on our website.
NSIWA is run by an Executive Board that consists of the Officers of the association. In addition, our monthly Executive meetings are attended by committee chairs. Joining a committee is a great way to become involved in the association, and to meet new people. We are always looking for volunteers for events, as well as members to chair and/or co-chair committees as people move onto or up the Executive, or when time commitments change. If you are interested, you can reach out to anyone on the board, as well as indicating on your membership form that you would like to be more involved.
CAIW hosts a national convention every year that all members can attend. This convention is hosted by one of our associations, and locations change yearly. This convention takes place in either May or June and is a great way to meet and network with various industry peers across Canada. Upcoming conventions are:
2026- Blue Mountain, Ontario
2027- Brandon, Manitoba
2028- Halifax, Nova Scotia
2029- St John's, Newfoundland
